I noticed this too. So I removed the n-m applet and replaced it with
the 'Network Status' applet, which does blink when there is activity...

Obviously this applet does not have the same features as the n-m, since
it doesn't manage the network, but just monitors activity on it. In my
case I didn't care because I don't happen to use any of the n-m applet
specific features... this may or may not be your case !

Of course you could still have both applets side by side, they aren't
mutually exclusive at all...
