Karl,
lspci will show your wireless chipset regardless of it's state. More
than likely, the lack of backports is your problem unless you're certain
you have it installed for your kernel.
If you have the newer atheros chipset, you may have to blacklist the
ath5k driver and switch to a manual install of madwifi.
