usplash uses framebuffer, which X usually doesn't.  It's possible that
framebuffer on your card won't do that resolution.

The grub prompt hit 'e' and add vga=791 to the end of the line and see
if it works then.
If it does, then edit the grub/menu.1st file to make your change permanent.
