exim4 maildir configuration question

How should I change the default ~/Maildir/ destination that exim4 uses
when you set dc_localdelivery='maildir_home' in update-exim4.conf.conf?

It looks as if I need to set MAILDIR_HOME_MAILDIR_LOCATION but where
should I set that?  I have tried putting it in /etc/default/exim4 but
it doesn't seem to have any effect, my mail still obstinately arrives
in ~/Maildir/.

I have restarted exim4 and have even restarted the whole system but to
no effect.
