That's the point...I *couldn't* switch to a terminal.

X wouldn't let me.

Screen was garbled, and static. Not moving. Except for my pointer. I was 
reduced to waving me pointer about the screen. So unless you want to 
kill X by holding middle button + mouse gesture, that doesn't work.
