enablign usb headset

Hello,

How do I enable my usb headset under intrepid?

I hear everything perfectly through the speakers, but I would like to be
able to use my usb headset at times, but when I plug it in, the sound
still comes through the speakers.

I would like it to be that when I plug in the headset audio is
automatically switched to the headset, but if they are not plugged in
sound comes through the speakers like usual.
