Thanks for the info but I usually go with BestBuy in the USA as they are about the lowest price and you can get them to get the warranty service started.
Don't give up on the winmodem(software modem) as most can be made to work in Linux.  It's been a long while but AIR, the Conexant site had a lot of info to get you started.
