The problem is that the bios is by Phoenix Technologies and quite
restricted as to what is possible to adjust (passwords, boot order and
crossfire support). Then something called ASF.

The boot process doesn't actually stop - it seems that if I use the
acpi=0 an noapic options then X fails with "Unknown X keysum
dead_belowcomma"
