Mixmaster and SMTP

Does anyone know how the get the Ubuntu Hardy version of mixmaster to 
work while using GMail for your outgoing SMTP server?  

No matter what I do I seem to be getting authentication errors at the 
SMTP server.  I tried this on another server as well with the same 
result.  The delay is so short I don't think the authentication, or even 
the connect, is really being done at all.

Any ideas, or should I ask on another forum?
