pidgin problem in unbuntu 8.04 LTS

I apologize ahead of time if I misunderstand your question. When you do
a base install of ubuntu you get pidgin by default. I am curious why you
decided to install from internet packages. Your problem could stem from
a conflict of the programs.

Another note for you is that I have read notes on Yahoo changing over
protocols on their messenger service. This is causing issues with pidgin.
