I've played some more with this. Further results:

Logged out of X, sitting at GDM login:
CommitLimit: 3512236 kB
Committed_AS: 452512 kB

Log back in / GNOME (including nautilus, etc, but no user apps and no effects):
CommitLimit: 3512236 kB
Committed_AS: 789400 kB

Reboot / at GDM login:
CommitLimit: 3512236 kB
Committed_AS: 482064 kB

Start XFCE new session w/compiz:
CommitLimit: 3512236 kB
Committed_AS: 660792 kB

Log out

Start GNOME new session w/o compiz:
CommitLimit: 3512236 kB
Committed_AS: 878332 kB

(Reboot, new kernel courtesy of updates)

XFCE w/compiz and 1 konsole window after reboot, no user opened apps:
CommitLimit: 3512248 kB
Committed_AS: 709192 kB

XFCE w/typical app mix including FF, Chrome, multiple Konsole windows and a few vims.
CommitLimit: 3512248 kB
Committed_AS: 1577520 kB

Hmmmm. Hungry system.
