error while using qemu arm ubuntu image

you need to define a serial console in your append line for this
option...

also see [1], you need to configure upstart to offer a login prompt on a
serial console (boot with init=/bin/bash in your append line and
create /etc/event.d/ttyS0 in your image as described, then reboot
without init=/bin/bash)
