Over the past few months I've been reading about the various problems
you've been having loading apps and generally getting things to run with
both Jaunty and Hardy.  Typically you've have attempted a several
different fixes which don't work, but finally you get something patched
together.  Taken together its a pretty heady list of things of things
that are "sort of" working.  I'm beginning to think that with some of
your fixes, or something with your initial Ubuntu install has gone bad,
and subsequently screwing up everything else. 

It might be worth doing a clean install from scratch; my guess is that
you'll be having fewer problems and saving time in the future.
