On the whole, though Canada's population is not very large, our banks are - 
because we only have (quickly popping fingers out of my mittens...) 5, maybe 
6, full-scale banks, and a couple of other large financial institutions.  
Not many other countries have such a system (which is why we have largely 
missed the financial sector collapses that have hit elsewhere in the last 
year).
