Not able to boot ubuntu 9.04

Hello,

I upgraded from ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 few days ago.
My laptop was working fine till yesterday but after installing some new
applications and themes, now I am not able to boot ubuntu in normal mode.
However, I am able to boot using the recovery mode.
If I boot in normal mode, the screen will flash for three times and it gets
stuck in a screen which is almost blank.

I am not sure what the problem is and I need your help since I had some
important data on ubuntu!! I cannot lose my data.. :(

I hope I will get some help in recovering ubuntu on my laptop.
