Jaunty Update Manager is broken

It does... can you please report on the results of these commands?

Wait 16 minutes and try:

$ gksu update-manager

Did it prompt you for a password?

Remember that once you've entered your password, sudo, gksu, etc., will
not prompt you again for at least the default of 15 minutes.
