Why should one be using an email client that supports HTML 5, let alone
HTML, when the mailing list etiquette specifically requests users to
post in plain text (as is common for most mailing lists, as is bottom
posting). Not to mention users using console clients which do not
support HTML.

Regardless of how well your brain functions, it is common courtesy.
