How do I upgrade my 8.10 server to 9.04?

Only if you know what your doing. The recommended method is to use do-release-upgrade [0].
One would use the dist-upgrade method if the preferred upgrade path (hint files) conflict with your preferred setup. Dist-upgrade is for experts only.
