I got rid of a line in the startup script on R and tried again.
And it works!
Though I have an interesting complaint from the invocation on U:
"stty: standard input: Invalid argument"
Do you know what this means?

The problem I ran into by what you suggest is that I set
the DISPLAY variable on R via a shell startup file. And
it is not set as the name/address of U. As such, the display
of the clock goes to a different monitor/screen.
With ssh you should never need to manually set DISPLAY. A properly configured ssh connection will forward X itself.
I suggest removing any scripts that manually set DISPLAY on R and try again.
