You didn't say if you've successfully connected on $M or which isp you 
use.  But, another good alternative is kde's kppp, but it will install a 
bunch of libs to be able to use it on gnome.

Also, if your using roadrunner, be aware that you have to manually enter 
their script in kppp, and no other dialup has been found to work.
