Hello,

Just wanted to share that Microsoft VX-1000 webcam works in Jaunty but
by using the new kernel, 2.6.30, from Karmic. How to pull the new kernel
from Karmic to Jaunty is described in my recent post (sub: apt pinning
and pulling new kernel from karmic).

Under 2.6.30 kernel, syslog shows the following when the camera is
detected during boot process:

Jun 4 00:15:17 jaunty kernel: [ 10.808648] usb 2-1: SN9C105 PC Camera
Controller detected (vid:pid 0x045E:0x00F7)
Jun 4 00:15:17 jaunty kernel: [ 10.953602] usb 2-1: No supported
image sensor detected for this bridge
Jun 4 00:15:17 jaunty kernel: [ 10.953663] usbcore: registered new
interface driver sn9c102
Jun 4 00:15:17 jaunty kernel: [ 10.989147] usbcore: registered new
interface driver snd-usb-audio

~$ lsusb | grep Micro
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 045e:00f7 Microsoft Corp. LifeCam VX-1000.

(This camera created a /dev/video0 device)

And cheese application was able to display the video from the webcam.
The video also worked in Ekiga.

Note that the camera is also detected in Jaunty 2.6.28 kernel but no
/dev/video0 device is created. Moreover, the gspca-source module in
Jaunty fails to compile. Also, the gspca module from
http://linuxtv.org/hg/~jfrancois/gspca/ did compile, also created the
/dev/video0 device, but did not show a video from the camera. Not to
mention that fact this gspca module changes the kernel modules
permanently and the only way to revert that is to resintall Jaunty's
kernel (how, see my recent post with sub.: how to remove manually
installed gspca modules). In short, gspca in Jaunty is a mess.

Regards.
