Best guess without testing the scenario:

The players should have defaulted to /dev/dvd by default.

However, when you replaced your DVD-ROM drive, presumably in a way that
caused udev to identify it differently (different master/slave settings,
or changing from IDE to SATA?) the persistent CD rules in udev
configuration decided to name your new Drive dvd1 instead of dvd, and
/dev/dvd was no longer on your system. Now when you started the player,
they tried to open /dev/dvd, but there was no longer any such device, so
they fall back to the next best guess (which in this case, was either
/dev/hda or /dev/sda7, neither of which would do any good.)
Unfortunately, it seems those programs saved the new device in their
config, so now you have to manually fix the device setting.
