I do my own authoritative DNS.  I also have a secondary authoritative
server on a separate ISP for redundancy.  The requirement for at least 2
DNS servers on separate networks is probably the main reason it is
easier to let your ISP do this for you.  Any ISP worth anything will
have secondary authoritative servers on separate networks.
