Are you sure of the x64 version? I just installed 8.04LTS 64 bit on a 500Gb
drive with tons of RAM (and 5 hard drives totaling ~2Tb).
When the partitioning part of the install was running, it did 'stick' at
around 33% but after about 5 or 6 minutes, it did continue.
I didn't use the alt install, though. I downloaded the iso from Ubuntu site
and just ran it.
