derek,

Thanks!

After I posted my questions, I went looking for the info that made me
think that swap files were recommended. I am getting old and do not
trust my memory that much. I used this doc,
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq (last edited 2009-04-30), or a
version of it, about a year ago, and set up three machines at home. All
are running 8.04 without issues, at least in regards to swap.

The doc still states that you can't use swap files with hibernation. We
don't use hibernation, although I should figure out how to disable it
completely, just in case. What would happen if someone tried to
hibernate with swap files...

All,

Another interesting article in preparing multiboot machines;
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386/non-debian-partitio
ning.html.
