Depending on how the router is giving out network addresses.  If John is 
using static IPs, he'll have to define his DNS on his system as that of 
his router which should in turn use the DNS of the provider or at least 
populate with that.

Using NM and DHCP, I'm getting my provider's DNS info from my router.
