apt get vs synaptic pacage monitor

This is normal. apt-get update only refreshes the package list.
To install upgrades, you need to do

$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
or
$ sudo aptitude full-upgrade

after sudo aptitude update.

This is not normal, but I don't know what is wrong. I never use
update-manager.
