[ubuntu users] Upgrading

I originally installed version 7.10 Ubuntu desktop and server. No
problems! As time went on there were successive automatic kernel
upgrades now all the way up to release 8.04 (Hardy), Whenever there was
a kernel upgrade I would get 2 versions with one notated as "Restore..."
The last automatic upgrade "failed" and it now appears unable to
recognize the file system or some aspect of the file system. Every time
I have to power down I get this same problem and the system indicates
something wrong with the file system and then provides a admin shell
telling me to fix the problem. Basically, I have to shut down and take
the Restore version which does recognize the file system and everything
is fine until I again have to shut down. I use the System Monitor to
display the file system and I was able to confirm that after shutting
down and then booting back up only a small portion of the hard drives
were visible by the System Monitor. Upon this condition I then
activated the restore kernel.
On every upgrade there was a failed effort to upgrade CRON and several
other utilities but never this kind of scenario.where I had to activate
the Restore kernel version.. The hard drives NOT recognized were all
NTFS format except for one that was transformed to ext3 format. I don't
know what is the difference between the regular kernel upgrade and the
restore. There have been over 6 upgrades with the upgraded kernel
version on the top (the default after so many seconds) and below it the
restore version which can be selected. So I have about 6 of these
PAIRS of kernel upgrades with the last upgrade somehow being
prematurely stopped but with the restore version seemingly okay.
I am only guessing when I say that the last restore version of the
kernel pair is somehow a rollback to the previous upgrade which, if that
is the case, there will be no more successful kernel upgrades until I
get this problem sorted out and I don't have a clue other then to
somehow remove the last failed kernel upgrade and somehow attempt a
successful retry.
Hopefully there will be someone who understands this problem.
Thanks, Ted Hilts
PS: Please use "[ubuntu users]" as the first part of the subject as my
email machine with all the filters is in the hospital and I belong to a
lot of lists (between 3000-9000 emails a week) and this will help me
catch any responses.
