O;der kernel still hasno sound.  So it doesn't seem to be the kernel. 
There should be a sound when the llgin screen appears, even before 
someone logs in, so it is not user specific, so it has to be a system 
wide file someplace.  Any ideas of files I might be able to copy 
overfrom the boot disk>
