Hello,

I don't know about Totem, but with VLC also, I cann't get movie running.
Here is the output
from VLC:

 Playback failure:

DVDRead could not open the disk "/dev/sr0".

Your input can't be opened:

VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.
