CD/DVD Cann't use

Do you get any kind of error message when you insert the CD or DVD, or 
does it simply not work at all? Do music CD's play or ask you what you 
want to use to open them, or do all CD's and DVD's not work? Are you 
able to boot from a live CD version of Ubuntu? What search terms did you 
Google?
