After searching a bit about that device it seems to be supported by the 
kernel of the alpha version of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). 
If you are adventurous you might test with that version or you could 
wait until its release in October. If you test it with the alpha version 
and it doesn't work, it might be a good idea to file a bug report at 
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/>.

If you want to use the device with your current system, it would only 
work with a patched kernel, not the original Ubuntu kernel. I had 
another look at the Multitech driver package. There is a patch for 
kernel 2.6.27, that patch should work with the Ubuntu Intrepid kernel. 
You could get the Intrepid kernel and patch it with the file 
mts_ti_usb_3410-2.6.27.patch from the driver package. Then make your own 
kernel according to <https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile>.
