You're right in that "mutt -v" shows "+USE_SMTP" but I couldn't send 
without invoking an MTA in .muttrc. As soon as I did that mutt sent 
successfully. Right now I'm hung up on trying to get mutt to work with 
encryption. After modifying .muttrc according to a site I found, it asks 
for my pass phrase when I try to send and when I enter it mutt says that 
the mail was sent but nothing shows up. Commenting out the relevant 
lines in the .muttrc restores the sending capability. That's a subject 
for the mutt list. Just thought I'd throw it out here.
