The file /usr/sbin/kernel-helper is part of the grub package. If that 
isn't installed it looks very strange. Do you perhaps use the alpha 
version of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)?

Well, waiting for a long time after the message "Configurating network 
interface" could mean that the machine tries to connect to another 
machine to mount a network share. Maybe your previous connection to the 
server has something to do with it, but that is only a wild guess.
