Well, I think that is probably the core of your problem. If you are
not ready to try re-partitioning your hard disk just yet, I suggest
that you do one of 2 things:
- install your 80GB drive inside the system, to the motherboard IDE
or SATA controller, as applicable;
or,
- try doing a "Wubi" installation onto your Windows C: drive, which
is probably more likely to work than using an external drive.
If you're short of space on C:, you can probably free up a lot by
deleting all your temporary files and emptying the recycle bin.

Also, a free program called CCleaner will do some of this for you,
