/etc/rc.local not running contents on boot

Please post also
% ls -l /etc/init.d/rc.local /etc/rc.local
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 788 2008-10-14 15:02 /etc/init.d/rc.local
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 306 2008-07-02 12:16 /etc/rc.local

if a script isn't executable, it won't be run - an easy way
to temporarily disable services.
