Does this mean: 1) you are using the wired port, 2) that it works with
WinXP?

So post your ifconfig, resolv.conf, hosts, and all the usual suspects...
you know the drill.

Linksys what - there are many models of "Linksys"? Wireless, wired,
model, how configured, etc., etc.

What does that mean - "shows everything on the working computer"?

Spend $5-10 and buy another nic (even old used one should do):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/156496
[Realtek 8139 ethernet interface fails in Ubuntu (and several other
Linux distros) after changes made to interface by Windows Update]

On thing that I always have handy is a simple AirLink 101 USB nic adaptor:
http://www.airlink101.com/products/asohousb.php
Works on every Ubuntu linux machine that I've tried (Edgy thru Jaunty) &
requires no config... just plug it in and go. $25 on their website, but
I picked up mine at Frys for something like $5.
