Hello,
Just got to this. Sorry for the delay.
Unfortunately, I do not recall the names of the software.
I went to the download website and started selecting
programs that I would be interested in or was curious
about. One of the programs was Xubuntu. Not sure but it
seems that I installed Xubuntu within Ubuntu.
I decided to just start over. That is where I am now.
My next task is to get rid of the listing of previous
installation versions on the bootup menu. My almost
perfect previous installation was not accessible.
The computer would just freeze up.
Thanks.

Can you tell us what software you downloaded? If that software is
related to your problem, it might be good to know. OTOH, if you also did
an update it may be a problem unrelated to the software you installed.

Did you try the "xfix" option in recovery mode? That is the last entry
in the list, IIRC. You may have a problem with your graphics card and
the xfix option usually helps to get the xserver running again. You
wrote that you get a blank screen - is there a cursor in the upper left
corner or is the screen entirely blank?
