acpid oddity

9.04 on an Intel Atom board. Single core hyperthreaded,
so Linux thinks there are two CPUs.

System monitor shows one CPU always pegged at 100%.
Top shows kacpid using much resource.

sudo kill -9 18 has no effect. Nor does enabling or disabling
ACPI in the System-> Services menu.
