There might be a confusion here. I am talking about servo data that the
disk uses to dynamically steer the heads as the disk is running. It is a
lower level kind of formatting than "low level formatting". I don't
think modern disks can write their own servo data, this information
needs to be written more precisely than the heads are capable of doing
If a disk is ever completely erased of all magnetic everything, the
servo data will also be erased. And at that point I think your disk is
worthless.
