How can i restart sound in 9.04 without restarting ?

I have also tried that "/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart" but did not solve 
the problem.

Thanks to all who have helped. Actually i knew a restart would solve the 
problem but since i have seen several posts about sound problem in jaunty 
i presumed it was a known problem and the answer would be available and 
thats why i did not include some details. Any how i had to restart the PC 
and now sound is working. If it failed again i may send some details.
