you ssh to a running system, the command you execute through the ssh
tunnel is then a dd command which you should not do to a mounted
partition.
i think what you actually wanted to say is: "if your system runs from
sda1 how can you dd via ssh to it without having the partition
mounted ?"
indeed that wouldnt work, you would either have to dd to another
partition or for example run the target machine from a livecd so the
disk partition wouldnt have to be mounted to have the sshd running.
