Mounting a Pro Ebiz LLC 16 gb player produces copious amounts of "attempt to access beyond end of device" in kernel log files

This might be device specific, but I'm curious. I recently purchased a
16 gig media player from Amazon & Pro Ebiz LLC, and for the most part,
the player mounts fine, I have no problems syncing files to the drive,
and the player just works fine under Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04.

However, I'm getting hundreds and hundreds of lines of the form

Jul 12 08:01:08 newbox kernel: [15530.140247] attempt to access beyond
end of dev
ice
Jul 12 08:01:08 newbox kernel: [15530.140249] sdg: rw=0,
want=1130396307, limit=3
2159744

and interspersed sometimes between these lines, I see something really strange:

I find this tto0tto stuff very strange indeed. Could it be a symptom
of a corruption somewhere, either in the kernel or in the syslog tool?

I've never seen such a message before, and I've had other mountable
devices before (cameras, mp3 players, etc.) and I never received
notifications such as these.

I'm thinking corrupted filesystem, but the device arrived brand-new
from the factory a few weeks ago (in fact it is a replacement for the
same device that exhibited some display problems, although I do not
recall seeing these messages with that player before.)

One part that may not be Linux-specific, but related to the player:

I'm seeing on the device hundreds of files that are very small (1.5K
approx) and have very strange names. For instance:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 dfox root 1784 1983-07-22 17:00 ±.≤

These files cannot be deleted from Linux (or windows). They can be
deleted from inside the player, but it's tedious to do so, and it
seems that mounting or accessing the device puts more of these kinds
of files on the device.
