Thanks.  This is the M/B I persuaded my supplier to substitute (even
though they said their tests showed nothing wrong with the original Asus),
using the 3Ghz Phenom, and it seems good. It sort of installed 9.04 out of
the box.

By 'sort of' I mean that I had to use the text installer on the alternate
CD because ubiquity kept crashing during the normal install.  I believe it's
a known bug.

Clearly the Asus M4A78 Pro board, which wouldn't run anything for me, has
problems, at least for some, and should be avoided.
