That looks normal & I find no issue with the hostname. Only difference I
see on mine are: '::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback' but I tested by
removing the 'localhost' in '::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback'
and it made no difference.

wlsdev18-2, thus my consternation especially since I did not knowingly
make a change.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that... you have my sympathy :-) That would have
been helpful at the start... still is. Perhaps someone with a kubuntu
desktop can assist? Perhaps something in kmanager, k(networksomething)
is causing the issue?
Did you try Siggy's suggestion to look in the system log to see if your
hostname is in the log? In /var/log/syslog you should see something like
this:
Jul 11 14:00:00 wlsdev18-2
<date> <time> <hostname>
Note: you are rebooting when asked to make changes to /etc/hosts and
/etc/hostname correct?
Can you please reboot & before doing anything else, open a terminal and
see if you can ping both localhost and wlsdev18-2?
$ ping localhost
$ ping wlsdev18-2
Are you connected via a wired or wireless connection? Can you please
post the output of:
$ ifconfig -a
Note: I have to admit that I'm trying WAG's here. But hopefully doing so
will bring out something that someone on the list recognizes and can add
to help troubleshoot the issue.
