Try turning desktop effects off.

No, I don't have any insight into any known bug, but suspect something
along the lines of overheat.

When dealing with unusual computer behaviour, it's also a good idea to
always run memtest for a few hours (Memory test from the install cd) and
also run badblocks against your hard drive.

(ex: sudo badblocks /dev/sda)
