Ubuntu 9.04 and the latest official Java JRE/JDK

They do through the medibuntu repo I believe.

The medibuntu is the community provided support they mentioned.  Since
Ubuntu is committed to total free AND open software Java's closed source
restricts it from mainstream and will reside in the medibuntu.

If you haven't done so,

System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager

Settings->Repositories

click on Third-Party Software tab

check that Medibuntu is checked

click Close

click Reload

You can do a search for "jre" now and your options should for 5,6, etc
should come up.

Any updates which come down through the community should arrive through
this channel.
