problem with hostname

And that's bad advice - don't use sudo for graphical applications, use 
gksu or kdesudo instead. And someone else gave the correct advice 
already, i.e. "gksu gedit /etc/hostname".

This isn't helpful either:

~/ > sudo /etc/hosts
[sudo] password for nils:
sudo: /etc/hosts: command not found

I don't know what you wanted to do with that command but /etc/hosts has 
nothing to do woth the hostname of the machine.
