80GB USB HDD & No Permission

Make a directory on the disk owned by you with these commands

sudo mkdir /media/disk/$USER
sudo chown $USER: /media/disk/$USER

where you would replace the /media/disk part with the actual mount point 
if I guessed wrong.

Then you can backup your files to the new directory which is owned by 
you.
