update manager crashes

the version is 09.04 (Intrepid Ibex) and when I attempt to have the manager
update the system a large white square appears in the middle of the screen
and I'm obliged to reboot.  Any suggestions that don't involve the CLI --
I'm quite weak at it -- will be greatly appreciated.
